Learn photography the slow way.

Vignette Spark is a small independent school. Six to twelve students per course, tutors who still take pictures for a living, and a darkroom that has been running since 2015. You shoot every week, and every week your work goes on the wall.

The Studio

A working building, not a classroom.

Three daylight and flash studios, a four-enlarger wet darkroom, a print-finishing bench and an editing room with calibrated screens. Students book the space free for the length of their course and at member rates afterwards.

  • Loan kit: Canon, Nikon, Fuji and 120 film bodies
  • Profoto and continuous lighting, fully briefed
  • Chemistry, fibre paper and mounting included
  • Termly student exhibition in the front gallery

Tutors

Taught by photographers who are still out there working.

  • Marisa Okonkwo

    Head of Portrait & Lighting

Editorial portraitist for twelve years; teaches lighting as a series of decisions, not recipes.

  • Ellis Faber

    Documentary Lead

Long-form documentary photographer. Two published books, both made slowly, both close to home.

  • Tom Halloran

    Darkroom & Print

Master printer. Believes nobody truly understands contrast until they have split-graded a print.

Stories

What students leave with.

  • I arrived shooting on auto and left with a printed photo essay about my own street. The critiques were kind and completely honest.

    Priya R.Documentary & Street

  • Twelve weeks of mentoring got my portfolio into a shape I could actually show. I got the commission.

    Daniel S.Portfolio Mentoring

  • The darkroom smells like my grandfather's flat and I have never been happier. Tom is a very patient man.
